Cold Outside? Give These Movies a Try

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

One of the surprise hits recently is Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Nominated for seven Academy Awards, there is a lot of buzz around this particular film. Admittedly, it isn’t for everyone due to its dark subject matter, but is a tour de force for actors Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, John Hawkes, Peter Dinklage, and Sam Rockwell.

The critics consensus on Rotten Tomatoes notes that the movie “deftly balances black comedy against searing drama–and draws unforgettable performances from its veteran cast along the way” and it currently holds the rating of being 93% fresh. In short, if you’re looking for a wonderfully directed movie with some of the best performances in recent memory, this is a great option for any movie buff. The screenplay has also been nominated for an Academy Award for Martin McDonagh who is also known for his films In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths, which were also praised for their outstanding writing.

Blade Runner 2049

In a day and age where everything is either getting an unnecessary remake or an unnecessary sequel, Blade Runner 2049 is a breath of fresh air. Once again, we’ll turn to Rotten Tomatoes and their critics consensus which states that the film is “visually stunning and narratively satisfying” and that it” deepens and expands its predecessor’s story while standing as an impressive filmmaking achievement in its own right.” We couldn’t agree more.

Amazing performances from Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford are pretty much a guarantee these days, and Blade Runner 2049 is no exception. If you’re a fan of the first film, there’s a good chance you’ll appreciate the direction the story heads in the sequel.

Set three decades after the first movie, there is plenty to love about this excellent movie and if you for some reason don’t appreciate the plot, you’ll be captivated by the amazing visuals.

Dunkirk

Known for helming films such as The Dark Knight Trilogy, Interstellar, The Prestige, Inception, and Memento, Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk takes a look at the experiences of soldiers stationed in Dunkirk during World War II. It is unique in that the viewer gets to experience three different perspectives of the way from the air, the land, and the sea.

The film currently holds a 92% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes where the consensus states that “Dunkirk serves up emotionally satisfying spectacle, delivered by a writer-director in full command of his craft and brought to life by a gifted ensemble cast that honors the fact-based story.” This film is also nominated for several Academy Awards–eight of them to be exact–and is superb in every regard.

From its story to its performances to its sound editing to its direction from Nolan, this is one movie that has a whole lot going for it.
