In our previous propane grill blogs, we’ve covered everything from grilled cheese sandwiches to burgers, steak, and chicken. Today, we would like to take a closer look at the art of grilling chicken wings. A staple at Super Bowl parties and bars, chicken wings make an excellent appetizer and can be served as the main dish as well. People love both the tenderness and crunchiness of a perfectly cooked chicken wing. Consider serving up some savory chicken wings at your next backyard barbecue for some truly optimal results. Today, we would like to offer some tips for cooking the perfect chicken wings.
Preparing Your Bird
Prior to grilling your wings, you need to season all sides with kosher salt and freshly ground pepper. Stay away from using regular table salt and ground pepper from a shaker in order to yield optimal flavor results. We recommend cutting off the tips of the wings because you can’t eat them and your wings will lay flatter on the grill. Don’t pour any delicious sauce onto your wings just yet; it could burn while cooking on the grill.
Heat Levels
Before beginning your grilling adventure, you’ll need to preheat your grill. For optimal results, heat one side of the grill to a high heat level and the other side to a low heat level.
Begin On The Cool Side
First, place your wings on the low heat side and cover so that the heat can melt the fat away. Wings have a higher ratio of skin to meat, so the fat needs to be removed. By cooking the wings first under a low heat, your wings will be crunchier on the outside while remaining tender on the inside.
Break Out The Sauce
Once the fat has melted away, you can remove the chicken from the grill and coat it in your favorites sauce. With wing sauces, the options are limitless, and some options include lemon-pepper sauce, teriyaki sauce, and Buffalo sauce (our favorite). Pour your favorite sauce into a large bowl, add the wings, and toss them.
Time For High Heat
This is our favorite stage of cooking hot wings; the crisping stage. Place the wings on the hot side of the grill without crowding them together and quickly cook all sides. You need to pay extra attention to avoid burning the sauce, and it only takes about five to ten minutes to crisp the wings. You’ll know that they are done when the outsides are nice and caramelized with a crispy outer texture.
Eat ‘Em!
Chicken wings taste great served alongside some slices of celery and carrot as well as with some blue cheese or ranch dressing for dipping. People seem to hold very strong opinions about whether ranch or blue cheese is the better choice for serving alongside chicken wings, so serve both to avoid any fights breaking out.
Enjoy your chicken wings no matter what sauces you use for both cooking and for dipping. Make sure that you never run out of propane for your grill by using DiSanto Propane for your propane refills in upstate New York.
