Welcome to part two of this two-part series ingeniously titled, “we’ve been around since 1937 — what’s happened between then and now?”
If you’ve read part one of this series, you’d already know that we are doing our darndest to be as thorough and comprehensive as possible when it comes to covering all major historical events that happened between our founding year and the present. While we covered our own backsides with some qualifiers in the first post, we’d be remiss if we did not repeat ourselves to some extent. Specifically, any list we provide will be biased and missing significant events. This isn’t only because we are just one propane service provider with our own, limited perception, but also because we are Americans. As such, we are confined to a context that is far from objective. That’s why we’ve highlighted the Cold War, the Space Race, and the African-American Civil Rights Movement in part one.
All that to say, while we’ve stated that we’ll do our best to be comprehensive, we won’t be, because it’s essentially impossible.
DiSanto Propane And Our Mighty Flame Tank Exchange Program
Now that we’ve covered the possibly-imagined-need for liability in this piece, let’s talk about something that is far from impossible if you live in Upstate New York — getting propane heat in your home or propane refills with DiSanto when you opt into our Mighty Flame Tank Exchange. Not only do we offer home propane services, but we give our customers the opportunity to take their empty DiSanto Propane tank to one of the many tank exchange locations we’ve got set up across the nation. It’s a great program because you can leave your empty tank next to the outside Mighty Flame propane tank exchange cabinet. There’s no need to take it into the store. Then you can go inside and get your exchange tank. All you need to do is stick your new tank in your A to B, turn up the radio, and let the good times roll!
20th-Century Historical Events
Let’s get to the meat and potatoes of today’s post — the real reason you are here — to bask in the glory of the fact that DiSanto Propane has been around since 1937 by examining historical facts that have occurred from our inception until now. As we said in part one, keep reading if you are interested in lists, world history, the internet, blogging, the 90s, propane, propane tanks, home propane services, American history, and that’s about it. Let’s go!
Although, before we get going, we should tell you that this post is not going to be as thorough as the previous one. You might find it to be more arbitrary and therefore perhaps entertaining. Either way, let’s get going…for real this time.
- Seeing as it’s International Women’s Day, we feel especially compelled to point out that in 1966, Betty Friedan co-founded the National Organization for Women. We aren’t sure who the other co-founder was, but we’d bet that it’s a man because they aren’t listed in the resources we have available to us.
- In the Federal trial Loving v. Virginia, the United States Supreme Court found all of the state anti-miscegenation laws to be unconstitutional (and downright insane, if you are asking us), which effectively ended all legal restrictions with regards to race-based limitations on marriage.
- In 1969, the Santa Barbara oil well blowout led to the spillage of over 100 tons of oil into the Pacific Ocean over the course of eleven days.
- 1970 was an eventful year with regards to environmentalism. Earth Day was founded, Congress passed the Clean Air Act as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the National Environmental Policy Act, in which each federal agency had to prepare an environment impact statement.
- In 1973, the Roe vs. Wade case determined the fate of the nation’s trajectory for many years to come. The decision was made to legalize abortion in the first trimester of pregnancy, ruling 7-2 in favor of the act. The justification involved a certain understanding of “fetal viability,” which was qualified as “potentially able to live outside the mother’s womb, albeit with artificial aid.” In 1992, the Supreme Court rejected the “trimester framework” while affirming the tenet of “viability.” Roe vs. Wade was a national debate that could be said to have fractured the nation from a moral and political standpoint. We’d say this fracture was far from compound, if you’ll allow the metaphor to continue. And yet, the debate continues to be a hot-button issue around election time.
- In 1979, Margaret Thatcher became the Prime Minister of Great Britain. She happens to be one of the most quotable leader of nations in this century, in our humble opinion anyway. Allow us to relay a few of our favorite. “If my critics saw me walking over the Thames they would say it was because I couldn’t swim.” “Power is like being a lady…if you have to people you are, you aren’t.” If you set out to be liked, you would be prepared to compromise on anything at any time, and you achieve nothing.” “No one would remember the Good Samaritan if he’d only had good intentions; he had money as well. “Standing in the middle of the road is very dangerous; you get knocked down by the traffic from both sides.” As you can tell, she was quite the politician and woman — one of our favorites here at DiSanto Propane in New York!
- In 1982, Wisconsin became the very first state of the Union to make discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation illegal. Two years prior, Ronald Reagan, a former film actor, was elected president. He quickly broke the air traffic controllers strike that was occurring at the time, and got his Superfund legislation passed. This legislation forced the cleanup of hazardous waste sites by responsible parties!
- In 1989, the Berlin Wall was physically dismantled by German citizens as the Soviet Union retreated. The reuniting of East and West Germany continues to be one of the most emotionally moving events to witness in the entire century.
- In 1990, Congress passed the Americans with Disabilities Act, which many would say was the most important employment legislation over ten years in either direction. While we aren’t qualified to comment on the veracity of that claim, we will tell you that the coverage received under this act was significant for a massive portion of the American population. The act covered physical or mental impairments, including cosmetic disfigurement, neurological, digestive, musculoskeletal, respiratory, and other issues, among which might be organic brain syndrome, mental retardation, emotional or mental illness, and certain learning disabilities.
- From 1990 until today, there has been the spreading of the world wide web, the invention of smartphones, 9/11, Desert Storm, a second Middle Eastern conflict/war, terrorism in Afghanistan and Syria, Brexit, Pluto being reclassified as a dwarf planet, Hurricane Katrina, the first African-American President being elected in the United States, the “Great Recession,” DVDs replacing VCRs, the rise of social media, and, of course, the end of the Harry Potter series.
- We might be going out on too weak of a limb on this one, but we’d argue that the last one just might be the most significant event in all of human history. We have absolutely no evidence to back that outlandish claim up, we just are really, really big fans.
