Disney Wanted Leonardo DiCaprio to Play Max Dennison
Originally, DiCaprio was offered a huge sum of money to play the role of Max Dennison, the film’s protagonist. However, the young actor turned down the role and soon after agreed to play Arnie Grape in the 1993 movie, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. This role transformed DiCaprio’s career because he was nominated for both an Oscar and an Academy Award.
The Story’s Origins
Producer David Kirschner created the story one night as a bedtime story for his daughter. Rumor has it that he was inspired after spotting a neighbor’s black cat strolling through the backyard one night.
One of the central characters in the film is Thackery Binx, the young man who was transformed into a black cat by the witches. Binx the cat was played by nine different felines during filming.
Rosie O’Donnell Turned Down the Role of Mary Sanders
Originally, producers offered the role of witch Mary Sanders to Rosie O’Donnell. Apparently, O’Donnell simply didn’t want to play the part of a witch that kills children. Instead, Kathy Najimy took the role.

Originally, this film was meant to be a TV movie, but the studio quickly caught on to its potential and made it into a major motion picture instead.
