October is such a wonderful, glorious month. Not only is the weather absolutely spectacular, but it’s also the month of Halloween. At DiSanto Propane, we love Halloween, and we would like to share with you our reasons why:

But First…. The History of Halloween

Before we get started, let’s take a look at the history behind this beloved holiday. Prior to Halloween, the Celtic population celebrated a pagan holiday known as Samhain, which celebrated the end of summer and the beginning of winter. On this particular day, the Celtics believed that the dead were crossing over into the other side. Because this holiday took place over two thousand years ago, little is known about this mysterious holiday.

Halloween TV Shows

If you were a child in the nineties, Are You Afraid of the Dark probably scared the crap out of you and your friends. Around this same time period, a TV series was filmed based on the popular kid’s horror novels, Goosebumps. During the month of October, even non-scary TV shows feature a spooky twist with their Halloween episodes. Without a doubt, Halloween TV shows are just pure fun.

Halloween Movies

People either love horror movies or they hate them. If you love horror movies, this time of year is perfect for you. Pretty much 24 hours a day, popular horror movie series, including Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Halloween, are playing nonstop.

Just because you don’t like horror movies does not mean that you can’t enjoy other Halloween movies. In fact, some of the most popular Halloween season movies are quite campy and funny. One of the most legendary Halloween movies is Hocus Pocus, which is great fun. Ernest Scared Stupid also provides a healthy dose of dumb humor, which is quite welcome after a long day at work.

Haunted Houses

Although it seems quite illogical, a lot of people enjoy being terrified. With modern technology readily available 24/7, there’s not much room for mystery in our lives. Perhaps that’s why it’s so weirdly fun to visit your local haunted house and walk through darkened hallways, waiting for people to jump out at you. Although you always know that you will be chased by someone with a deactivated chainsaw, it never fails to scare you, ever.

Halloween Music

What’s better than Christmas music? Halloween music, of course. In our opinions, one of the greatest music videos of all time is Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” Even without a video, this spooky song is fantastic. Complete with early eighties attire, zombies, glowing eyes, and perfectly choreographed dances, Thriller never fails to delight us.

Thriller isn’t the only amazing Halloween song. During the Halloween season, you’ll most likely hear the theme song to The Addams Family or “The Monster Mash.”

Pumpkin Patches

Chances are, some of your local farmers will open their property to the public for all kinds of fun activities. You can pick out pumpkins in the pumpkin patch or pet animals in the petting zoo. On some of the farms, there could be a variety of different rides for your delight. Other farms open their land at night, where you can run around scary corn fields and mazes filled with terrifying creatures.

Ghost Tours

Do you love a good ghost story? We certainly do! Small towns and cities all across the county hold evening ghost tours to regale you with all kinds of spooky local lore. Some of the tours are walking tours, while you may even have the pleasure of riding around in a hearse for others.

Dress Up Your Dog

If you enjoy seeing Fido dressed as a hot dog or a witch, now is the time to do it. Although you may be looked down upon for dressing your dog in a costume in June, your actions will be appreciated in October (by everyone but your dog). If you have a cat, we would not recommend dressing her up in a costume or you will live to regret it. Cats really do hold a grudge.

Home Decorations

This is the only time of year when you can place fake tombstones with limbs sticking out in your front yard and no one will question your sanity. By all means, if you want to go all out with Halloween decorations this year, do it! Hang witch and ghost decorations in your trees and windows and cover different areas with fake cobwebs.

Candy

We couldn’t mention our love of Halloween without candy, right? Not only do you and your dog get to dress in wild costumes, you can beg your neighbors for candy by ringing the doorbell and saying “trick or treat.” Isn’t this truly wonderful? You’ll have candy for days! What’s not to love about that?

Costumes

When else can you dress up as a vampire and go grocery shopping without security getting called? Because Halloween is so popular, a variety of different costumes are available for you to purchase. If you are particularly crafty, you could make your costume yourself, putting your own unique twist on your spooky outfit.

Carving Pumpkins

After visiting your local pumpkin patch (or grocery store if you are short on time), you can finally carve a face into your pumpkin. Carving pumpkins is delightful fun, and you can roast the seeds you scoop out for a tasty treat.
