Whether you decide to stay in New York or take a road trip to one of our neighboring states in New England, now is the time to take advantage of this short-lived beauty.
Bar Harbor, Maine
Consider driving north to witness the beautiful granite cliffs, rocky coastline, towering mansions, and beautiful hotels. Back in the 1800’s the wealthy New England upper class often vacationed in this area in the fall and summer.
Located close to Acadia National Park, you can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities in both the mountains and the lakes. The best time to view the changing leaves is mid-October.
Huntington, New York
If you would prefer to stay within the state, check out this beautiful town located on the north shore of Long Island in Suffolk County. Head to the Caumsett State Historic State Park Preserve to enjoy over 1600 acres of meadows, woods, and freshwater areas. In this area, the fall colors peak a little later, so visit late October or early November.

New York City
This spectacular city is famous for its breathtaking fall scenery. If you are in Manhattan, head over to Central Park to view the fall foliage. It’s no mistake that Billie Holiday sang about autumns in New York when you check out this park in the fall.
We also recommend hopping on the subway to visit the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, which contains 52 acres of gardens, plant pavilions, and more. Locals really love visiting the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden this time of year. For the most beautiful views, visit this spot in mid or late October.
Stowe, Vermont
Located in northern Vermont, this resort town boasts itself as “Fall’s Color Capital.” From mid-September to mid-October, you can view the spectacular fall colors in the Mount Mansfield Auto Toll Road.
You could also hop in the gondola to view the colorful fall leaves from above. You may love this town so much that you revisit it in the winter to take advantage of its ski trails.
Woodstock, Vermont
This little town looks like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting, complete with covered bridges, and beautiful old houses. A variety of Greek Revival, Federal Style, and Georgian mansions dot the hillsides of this quaint town.
For the best views of fall scenery as well as the nearby Ottauquechee River, cruise the Vermont Scenic Highway. Consider staying in this town overnight, which features many charming restaurants and boutiques.
